Learning Centers

In the 21st century, some countries still do not permit women to vote. Among these are Brunei, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. [more]

The world's overall literacy rate is 46%, while only 26% of girls are literate. Independent sources and educational experts, however, are sceptical of these statistics. They place the overall literacy rate at 26% and the rate for girls and women at 12%, contending that the higher figures include people who can handle little more than a signature. In Pakistan, female literacy is 12-26%, compared 46% for men. In India, the national literacy rate for women is 37% compared to 64% for men.

Gender discrimination is worse in the rural areas. Economic opportunities for women are correspondingly bleak. eLIT intends to facilitate the economic independence of women in this region by unlocking a world of opportunities through technology education.

Working with existing schools or institutions, and with local coordinators, eLIT provides funds for the teacher, the facility, and for the computers where the classes are conducted. The international programs present specific challenges such as: female teachers needed to teach women, students with little or no familiarity with English, and the absence of a source of donated computers. The enthusiasm and commitment of those women is remarkable.

eLIT has centers in the following countries, with the hopes of opening more chapters:
